CELEBRATIONS to mark Southampton’s 50th year as a city will be taking a musical turn as a series of events involving thousands of children are revealed.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, Southampton Music Hub put out the call to schools and youth organisations to help celebrate the anniversary year by taking part in a series of musical events.

Some 3,000 youngsters from more than 50 schools across the city are now set to take part in a variety of events throughout June that will represent and celebrate the musical culture of the city through a series of performances.

Everything from recorder shows for parents to musical theatre productions at concert halls are being organised as part of the 50@50 project.

Part of the programme was to encourage youngsters to take up a musical instrument or try their hand at something they had never experienced before.

Kath Page, Hub manager from Southampton Music Services, said: “This is a fantastic way to celebrate the 50th anniversary. We have had a fantastic response from Southampton’s schools and are thrilled that so many are able to take part. The list of events is as diverse as our city, a true reflection of children’s interests and musical aspirations.”

She added: “The project, put simply, is ‘uniquely Southampton’, involving 54 schools and reaching almost 3,000 young people.

“There is a huge variety of events taking place, from Big Summer Sings to free to children’s concerts delivered by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. It is an inclusive project, ensuring musical activities for all children whatever their age or ability.”

One of the highlights of the programme takes place on June 25 with the In2Music extravaganza at Central Hall, 6-7.15pm which will be compared by popular children’s author Steve Cole.
