Sammy Lee to join Saints coaching staff

Daily Echo: Sammy Lee Sammy Lee

Sammy Lee looks set to join the Saints coaching staff.

Brighton appear to have made the announcement ahead of Saints, after confirming that 55-year-old Lee would not become Sami Hyypia’s new assistant manager, despite them having previously said he would start work with them tomorrow.

Instead, he will join Saints as part of Ronald Koeman’s back room staff.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber said: "It is extremely disappointing for the club, Sami Hyypia and those of us who worked hard to bring him here, that Sammy Lee has now reversed his decision after agreeing to become assistant manager.

"Nobody at our club or Bolton Wanderers, was aware of any interest from Southampton until several hours after we announced Sammy's appointment as our assistant manager. It's certainly not a situation any of us have come across before.

"Having already agreed his contract and terms with us to start work on Monday, we could have insisted on Sammy serving a notice period, but we all feel it would have been counterproductive to do so; and while it's incredibly frustrating for us we wish Sammy well.

"Our focus now is on working with Sami to help him recruit his assistant - while also supporting him to bring in the players he needs to improve the squad for the new season."

Lee added: "I was thrilled to be offered the job at Brighton and I was excited at the prospect of working with Sami Hyypia again - but, totally unexpectedly, I have been given an opportunity to work in the Premier League.

"I fully appreciate that this is not an ideal set of circumstances and I am very sorry for the inconvenience and any embarrassment my change of mind, after the announcement was made, has caused. However, at this stage of my coaching career, the opportunity to work again at the very top level of English football was not something I felt I could turn down.

"I hope that everyone at Brighton - including Tony Bloom, Sami Hyypia, Paul Barber and David Burke - and the club's fans can understand the difficult predicament I found myself in and why I made this decision.

"I would like to thank Tony, Sami, Paul and David for the opportunity to join Brighton and I genuinely wish them, the club and the fans the very best for the season ahead."

Lee was a much decorated player for Liverpool and even played a couple of games for Saints during a short spell at the club in the 1989/90 season.

He spent many years as a coach with Liverpool before leaving to become part of the England set-up.

Lee moved to Bolton to be assistant to Sam Allardyce before briefly taking the top job there, before rejoining Liverpool, and latterly Bolton again.

He joins Koeman’s staff that already includes his brother Erwin and Jan Kluitenberg and brings plenty of experience and knowledge of the English game with him.

I would have preferred it if he'd said "I've been given the opportunity to Join Southampton FC" or "I've been given the opportunity to work with the Koeman brothers" or he could even have said "I've been given the opportunity to work close to the cruise terminal where I can see for myself, the unique twin tidal system that gives Southampton the edge" but no "I've been given the opportunity to work in the Premier league". It kind of says it could have been any one of them, preferably Liverpo..... FFS. And if Koeman hasn't started yet, who decided he was going to be part of Koemans set up?
Is it me or does everything not seem right all the time with Saints at the moment? And the ultimate insult was watching the world cup Columbia v Uruguay, where Clive Tyldesley remarked that Gaston Ramirez is Southampton's most expensive player to which Andy O'Townsend remarked 'he could be their only player the way things are going'. So there you have it, that's what we've become, a joke on the lips of a Saints old boy on national TV. Grrrrrrrrr.
I knew we should have stayed in the Championship, Things were less complicated then.

We could all go and watch Reading. Brighton, Bournemouth or Aldershot for the first ten games of the season and not travel to away matches. That would us to enable us to see if we like the new Saints set up and team or not and we can all start sticking the knives right into everyone associated with the club if we get off to a poor start.. If however we start with a winning run we will still have our season tickets so will be able to go and support the club and say we were behind them from the start and pretend we weren't going to boycott any games.
If we get off to a poor start we could all say we told you so or we were right etc etc etc and continue to not support Saints but have the smug feeling of being right and walk round with big chips on our shoulders calling everyone who is still supporting the club a happy clapper or worse.
Both scenarios covered IMO.

I hope I am wrong but this appointment smacks of the old boys network and does not (in me at least) inspire any confidence. Still it may help us sell more of our academy kids to those big clubs in the northwest!

I'm not sure what the f@ck they mean!!

Anyone know how to get this message sent to them or can someone copy a send it for me??

Or do you think it's not worth it or a load of ****??

Good afternoon

Myself and thousands of Saints fans are rather concerned about what is happening to our team and club that we all love dearly and have spent a considerable amount of money supporting for many years.

We were all very pleased with the football we saw last season and the progress our young exciting team appeared to be making with a creditable 8th place finish in the toughest league in the world.

We were also looking forward to the world cup and watching numerous Saints players performing on footballs biggest stage.

However before a world cup ball was kicked our talented manager departed and since then the best players we have been supporting are now being sold under our noses.

This constant run of bad news is causing many of us fans to question your motives given the fact that there is no news coming out of the club from anyone from the board whilst our players are sold one after the other.

The team we had at the end of last season had the nucleus and backbone of a very good side which with a few decent additions could have taken this club onto the next level and possibly win a trophy.

Now we fear each day throughout this summer break as our team is disbanded and no news or statements are forthcoming about new signings or what your ( the board ) plans are for the club.

Many of us are becoming very frustrated and are starting to feel betrayed having already paid vast sums of money for season tickets etc to enable us to continue to support our beloved football club.

The silence from the club whilst this fire sale of our players continues could and will be seen as a sign of contempt from the clubs board to the fans the longer the silence from the club continues.

We urge you to do the honorable thing and at least let us fans know what direction you are steering our club or at least give us some good news about possible high profile signings which may replace the players that have and are to be sold.

We are the heart and soul of this football club and feel we should be treated with a bit more respect than we are at the moment.

Most of the fans are not overly impressed with your choice of manager and are surprised that you feel Sammy Lee is a valuable addition to the backroom staff but will continue to support our club as long as we have a team to support when the new season starts.

Can you please issue some sort of statement very soon to quell the spread of unrest and gloom that is currently eating away at most Saints fans.

We were sold a vision of "The Southampton Way" and have bought into this vision with heart and soul and hard earned cash.

What you appear to be doing at this moment in time is a million miles away from the "Southampton Way" and we are very worried to say the least.

Tried sending an email to Saints customer services to pass onto the board but can't get it to send they keep asking about server info etc. I'm not sure what the f@ck they mean!! Anyone know how to get this message sent to them or can someone copy a send it for me?? Or do you think it's not worth it or a load of ****?? Good afternoon Myself and thousands of Saints fans are rather concerned about what is happening to our team and club that we all love dearly and have spent a considerable amount of money supporting for many years. Well, well. I wish Saints all the best with Sammy Lee. His loyalty and integrity are second to none. Blimey, he never made it to Brighton's first training session, or thank God, wolf down any of the Albion's famous Piglets Pies!
So good luck . . . . Make sure he signs on the dotted line and watch out if Liverpool want his services again, remember they're another Premier league club so he'll be off in a flash.
By the way, what will he be doing at your gaff?

So, we've lost three of our very best players and, frankly, the queue will grow as the others return from the World Cup.

Poor, weak management and an 'open to offers' stance means that Lovren, Spider and probably Clyne will be queuing for the exit and that other clubs, having seen we are clearly lacking resolve to keep our players, will enquire about these and more: Cork, JWP, the list goes on.

Add that to the fact that we haven't even looked close to shifting the players we actually need to get rid of (Osvaldo, Ramirez etc) and we are basically looking at replacing about 10 players this closed season, taking risks with every signing we make.

Based on the expensive duds brought in by several Prem clubs last season (including ours) and we are basically entering the casino and hoping for the best.

We'll also be bringing in several unknown quantities, probably on big three-year deals.

Sorry, but I can't have confidence - would have preferred the board to stick to its original guns and concentrate on keeping what we had by being strong and unequivocal in saying that players were not for sale unless we say them are.

I feel for Koeman to be honest - has been given a very tough job. Could pull it off of course, but the pressure on his new signings is going to be massive.

You never know, players who were previously outside the inner circle because of the clich of our established players may flourish, but nothing Osvaldo, Wanyama and Gaston have done of late suggests that will happen.

Please board make me eat my words by doing something spectacular and unexpected, but I'm still waiting and getting less and less confident by the day.

Sammy Lee may not be a very good football manager but as he has`nt been given that job by the club I`m not sure that`s of any relevance. Think Brian Kidd.
Players who we don`t want to leave are leaving so understandably some fans are starting to panic about the quality of our team come the start of next season. However when Ronald starts work tomorrow he will have lots of money to spend and approximately six weeks in which to recruit replacements prior to the start of the season. When he`s put the new team together and we`ve had the opportunity to see how they perform we can then make an informed judgement on our summer business.
With regard to all the criticism of the players that have left and the likely reception they will receive upon their return, this just shows a lack of class on the part of some of our fans. Surely we can`t just forget the pleasure they`ve given us over recent years in the blink of an eye just because they are ambitious? The fact is they`ve done well by us and we`ve done well by them. Just move on. If you want loyalty get a dog!

When reading most of the posts on here when he was announced and talking with other Saints fans it would seem that the majority aren't to impressed but are prepared to give him a chance.
However that was when we had some decent players left at the club and he way things are going he will have to completely rebuild the side which is not going to be easy.
I would love him to put his own stamp on the side asap and succeed but have my doubts that he will have the time as we have not replaced anyone yet and more players are earmarked to leave.
It would however be a big thumb up the @rses of the players who have left if he does get it right from the start of the season...here's hoping!

The way I see it is this, Saints swept to 8th in top flight on the crest of wave following successive promotions. They had a settled side and a winning mentality.
The question I ask myself now is, will the players that leave the club be as comfortable fitting into a team operating under a different culture and philosophy to that they have been used to since they joined Southampton at such a young age.
To my mind It seems pretty obvious that next season the bulk of the team that we knew and loved will be broken up and we will have to start again.
Having been a season ticket holder since 1976 I have experienced the extreme highs and lows of supporting the team and many times felt like throwing the towel in but certainly not at the moment.
I think we will struggle but one thing I find encouraging is that we have engaged a proven manager in Ronald Koeman and with this in mind should be able to maintain our position in top flight and maybe extract revenge on some of the so called bigger clubs with their plastic supporters.

yes but shows completely the wrong type of business is being shown. I still stand by my posts yesterday that we need a board and owner that care as much about the club as us fans. Never before in my time supporting the saints (28 years) have I felt so let down and concerned. Under Rupert Lowe we always knew we had no ambition to do anything other than stay up. What hurts me and I suspect others, is that to have had 5 years of success and building to achieve something remarkable and then have a group of people running the club that aren't baacking their rhetoric with action.

Yes it is right that people say KL is the owner and sadly she can do whatever she likes. But my challenge is do we as fans have to sit back and accept it without showing the club exactly how we feel.

On the topic of Sammy Lee has he been appointed as there is nothing on the official site. Mind you so little is posted on the os these days that the site may as well be shut down. We need PLAYERS and a KIT not another coach.

Can't name any of the other 20 premier league clubs that is being run as badly as Saints is. And to cap it all worse is to come with the Sale of Lallana yet to be confirmed. The board must really despise the club and fans to be WILLINGLY allowing this to happen. Why don't they show some backbone. Oh silly me they don't care

Regards

A life long Saints fan
Very good BUT why do you say the majority of supporters are not happy with the managerial appointment In my opinion it's a step up,but only time will tell
All I know is he has one hell of a job on his hands
When reading most of the posts on here when he was announced and talking with other Saints fans it would seem that the majority aren't to impressed but are prepared to give him a chance.
However that was when we had some decent players left at the club and he way things are going he will have to completely rebuild the side which is not going to be easy.
I would love him to put his own stamp on the side asap and succeed but have my doubts that he will have the time as we have not replaced anyone yet and more players are earmarked to leave.
It would however be a big thumb up the @rses of the players who have left if he does get it right from the start of the season...here's hoping!
COYR
I think it's very well written. I would however take out any reference to the new manager because a) most want to give him a chance in very difficult circumstances and b) they will focus their answer on that point rather than addressing all the others!

yes but shows completely the wrong type of business is being shown.

I think West Brom fans might disagree with you.

It's a shame other clubs aren't bidding for some of the posters on here.

But then, why would they want anyone that continually carps on and on, about their own team, without giving the new guys a chance to show what they can do.

Fair weather fans.

This is a table from 2013, debt per club, a new top class manager with up to 100million to spend and family running the club that saved us ! I was a massive fan of NC but he had no respect for our history , our supporters, our staff and anyone that wanted to support the club including the sponsors ! Why so much negativity about a coaching appointment? And remember this will be a coaching appointment so why can't you neg heads judge Sammy Lee on what he can bring to us in the way of coaching?

Sammy Lee will NOT be the manager so do not judge this appointment on his managerial record or managerial ability. Judge him solely for what he can do as a coach.

Wow! That's a bit left field on this thread. It would make some sense.

Personally, I thought he had been brought in because he looks a bit like the Koemans' younger brother and they could therefore use him to do all their chores.

Regards

A life long Saints fan

yes but shows completely the wrong type of business is being shown.

I just hope IF !! we reinvest well and do better than the doom mongers on here suggest, those that have been so personally disrespectful to KL and LR F@CK off and support another club, maybe one with masses of debt but one that might win a trophy ?

Given that you are extolling the virtues of our lack of indebtedness how do you explain the comments from Ralph (remember him) about our finances being 'awkward' and 'difficult'? Surely he wasn't lying again?

This shows we mean business![/p]
yes but shows completely the wrong type of business is being shown. Oh silly me they don't care[/p]
God there so many PR@TTS out there !! This is a table from 2013, debt per club, a new top class manager with up to 100million to spend and family running the club that saved us ! I was a massive fan of NC but he had no respect for our history , our supporters, our staff and anyone that wanted to support the club including the sponsors ! We all cheered on our players that they get their International starts and now we pay the price as they get their wages tripled and a chance to play in the CL. It is the players that wanted to leave and not the club, the club have just made sure they get a solid return ..... I just hope IF !! we reinvest well and do better than the doom mongers on here suggest, those that have been so personally disrespectful to KL and LR F@CK off and support another club, maybe one with masses of debt but one that might win a trophy ? One things for sure, if you were KL and saw what our loyal fans think of the time and effort being put in to try and build a sustainable club for the future, would you say sod it and sell Saints down the River ! £985m -Chelsea £295m -Manchester United £189m -Aston Villa £177m -Queens Park Rangers £133m -Newcastle United £114m -Liverpool £93m -Arsenal £78m -Sunderland £77m -West Ham United £55m -Tottenham Hotspur £54m -Manchester City £45m -Everton £38m -Reading £36m -Stoke City £19m - Southampton FC ![/p]
What you have done here Buddy SFC is show exactly how well placed Saints were to invest in a squad that had been assembled for next to nothing. Why are the doom and gloom merchants on here trying to drag everyone down with them.
Along with a few others, I can’t wait and am looking forward to the start of the season, I don’t often post on the football articles but in the past have enjoyed reading them for their wit and humour, this is becoming a thing of the past, with Mr House and his friends becoming bitter and twisted against anything that is SFC.
Players, managers and board members come and go, so if you are truly that unhappy, find something that doesn’t force your depression onto the rest of us, after all, it’s only a game.

I quite often think the dreadful EU keeps coming up with policies deliberately aimed at upsetting the British public. Drip, drip, drip.

Sort of feel the Saints' board have cottoned on to this idea and try to upset us with something else every day!

One thing of which I am certain I am right, and that is no team which finished 8th, ever got rid of so many players before the next season started - and more to come!

Might be sad, might be puzzled but I really don't get it at the moment.

I don't think the Doom and Gloom merchants" as you put it are trying to drag everyone down, most people just cannot believe that a football club which was virtually a whisker away from something unbelievable, and that was firmly within its grasp, could,in a matter of weeks, literally turn in on itself, and just throw it all away needlessly.
Anyone who has seen something so ridiculous and unnecessary unfold before their eyes, and have to endure going from being a supporter of a well managed club, that could seemingly do no wrong,to a supporter of a club being turned into a laughing stock almost in the space of a week,in my book, has every right to be dissapointed, hurt and annoyed, and have a bloody good moan about it.

Players, managers and board members do indeed come and go, just not all at the same bloody time!

I was accused of being a happy clapper many a time, which I was very comfortable with. I am only now negative because I believe the board has lost all control of the situation and are in danger of wrecking all that has been achieved these last five years and throwing away the best opportunity we have had since 1984. At the age of 52 I'm not sure I can wait another 30 years!

Lads. It's not rocket surgery. This is what we have to beat in the EPL to finish in 8th place same as last season.

Can anyone see any of the above teams finishing higher than Saints next season?

With the team we have left and the new players coming in I still fancy Southampton FC to be pushing Manchester City , Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester United for a top 7 finish.

Regards

A life long Saints fan
Nice message! But the saints board won't care, to them you are just money for the club so they can run the club as a business, while you loyal fans are the heart!
Name me one club which is different - they are all money making machines and we are the fools who provide the money.

Now we have to hope we keep everyone else and buy some great players who fit into what's left of the team...So it's a bit of a lottery now, but I still like your positivity!

yes but shows completely the wrong type of business is being shown.

£985m -Chelsea
£295m -Manchester United
£189m -Aston Villa
£177m -Queens Park Rangers
£133m -Newcastle United
£114m -Liverpool
£93m -Arsenal
£78m -Sunderland
£77m -West Ham United
£55m -Tottenham Hotspur
£54m -Manchester City
£45m -Everton
£38m -Reading
£36m -Stoke City
£19m - Southampton FC !
Excellent post Buddy SFC ...... You are correct with your assesments.
.
I dont believe that KL, RK and RK want anything other than success for SFC. It was the players and manager that wanted to leave and thats entirely their decision however the club must ensure they are sold at our pricing and not that of Manure or the Scousers..
.
If anyone has kicked anyone in the teeth its the likes of AL and LS .... however who can blame them for upping sticks for a few good paydays and of course fulfilling their ambitions ..... I would do it and so would everyone else.
.
KL's first responsibilty and inbuilt strength is to ensure that the club is run by paying for itself and not stacked with debt remember the dump down the road )... She is no idiot as i believe that she now controls the Liebherr empire.
.
SFC will of course replace what players decided to leave and may well be an improvement on last season ...... AL, LS, and RL have gone and one or two others may follow .. so what .... lets move on, get them replaced and carry on where we left off last season
.

.
Yep get that,but.... big rons good, but Im not sure he,s that good, cant see how you can sell half the team and then rebuild it all and carry on as if nothings happened. Im sure he will have "his " players lined up" but cant help thinking that a closed season ,a few friendlies wont have us back in the groove. I was always under the impression that you cut adrift the deadwood and replaced with quality but kept your best players and that was the road to progression.
I,ll always support saints but even my optimism is being tested. I hope Les know what hes doing. can anyone enlighten me as to any premier league team that has sold almost (possibly) 50% of its team and rebuilt in a few weeks to be reborn as the next best thing. I live in hope.

Chill Seed , Chill ....... All will be fine .
He's been grumpy all summer, Slugger. It's your fault - and Bill's - it's your responsibility to leave bottles of Ringwood where the milkman leaves gold top but you've been sneaking off to Le Mans instead.

Good afternoon Myself and thousands of Saints fans are rather concerned about what is happening to our team and club that we all love dearly and have spent a considerable amount of money supporting for many years. Regards A life long Saints fan
Very good BUT why do you say the majority of supporters are not happy with the managerial appointment In my opinion it's a step up,but only time will tell All I know is he has one hell of a job on his hands

We need a signing this week. That would be good. And no more departures, other than fringe and Osvaldo.

In this case I'm not so sure CD.Something happened between NC leaving, and MP leaving, otherwise why would the players have stated openly the importance of MoPo staying? That's unheard of,even the Sunderland players never stated openly that they wanted De Canio to leave, even though it was rumoured.

For what it's worth, a very respected source, on Saints web, has said we have several players lined up, both from Europe and the UK (not necessarily England), with only one of the players he was told about being uncapped.

He has a good history of accuracy, so fingers crossed.

I was kind of hoping Holland would lose today, just to speed up transfers, assuming we are going Dutch.

it was an ok goal, not sure Greece deserved it though.
is it possible, and im not saying its the case, that the players knew that MP was going to go no matter what saints did (its clear when you look back at it that after NC left so did his interest!) and they used his leaving as an excuse to go themselves?
think about it, the players want to go but don't want to look like they are just chasing the money, so they keep saying that MP staying is vital knowing full well that he is off all the time, this gives them the `excuse`.
after all they loved and respected him so much and wanted nothing other than for him to stay yet as yet not one of them has shown any interest in following him to spuds r us! and he has made no attempt to sign any yet either!
just a bit of food for thought for all the conspiracy theorists out there!

Good afternoon Myself and thousands of Saints fans are rather concerned about what is happening to our team and club that we all love dearly and have spent a considerable amount of money supporting for many years. Regards A life long Saints fan
As far as I am aware, most Saints fan I have spoken to think Koeman is a good choice of manager, so this point could be a little flawed.

Also, did you send emails in to Southampton when Cortese was there given that he never spoke to the media regardless of what happened, even when the fans were in uproar over Adkins departure.

This board have given a slight glimpse they maybe willing to be a little more open with the fans than the previous regime and people seem to think they we have a right to now know everything they are doing, including what they are having for breakfast!

At this time, I am sure that the board have more important things to think about like trying to more forward rather than stagnate.

Why can't fans, many of whom seem to think they could do a much better job and think that we are a much bigger club with bigger pulling power than we actually have, leave the board to get on with it and judge them after the first 10-15 games rather than get on their back before a ball has been kicked.

Will the nay-sayers still be posting on here if we are sat in the top ten still at Christmas?

Well if the entire squad had stayed we might of had a chance of sneaking a Champions League spot maybe in fourth position . Any of our top players moving on will be to teams who expect a C/L spot. With the exception of Skiverpool that is likely to be the case. Add in the factor that they are at least multiplying their wages threefold and I'm not in the slightest doubt that the money is the major factor, far and away more important than C/L football. Ask Victor. He moved from a side guaranteed to qualify every season to come to us. Why? Better wages. Unless a player goes to a club which actually has a chance of winning it all their talk is just bluster. I don't blame any of them for taking the money. Just wish they would actually tell the truth when stabbing us in the back after we gave them their opporunity in life. I'm fully expecting the departures of Spider, Dejan and JRod (prob next window) but as long as we are receiving better than top dollar and screwing the "bigger" clubs I guess that's life. I certainly think we have done that with both Luke and Adam. There are plenty of left backs who contribute more than LS and while he may have great potential that's all it is currently. With Adam we were lucky last season. He was fairly injury free but he is a bit lightweight and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him on the treatment table more than on the bench next season.

They will be complaining that we are not in the top four.

Well if the entire squad had stayed we might of had a chance of sneaking a Champions League spot maybe in fourth position . Any of our top players moving on will be to teams who expect a C/L spot. With the exception of Skiverpool that is likely to be the case.

Why is Liverpool the exception
Because without Bugs Bunny they are no better than 7th or 8th.

Not sure that Reed is the right man for the job on several fronts.
Can't blame good players for trying to move up in the world. Everyone does the same in their own jobs and professions. They have all served the club proud. Unfortunately, it seems that the board have taken their eye off the ball!

Hard to believe but then again we have Les Reed at the club - a man who leave a trails of devastation in his wake.
So far Reed is responsible for being given the run around by the duplicitous MP with no plan B that left us wide open for ransacking from other clubs
Bringing in foreign players of dubious worth
Sacking Dodd and (forgot his name) coaches with whom academy players had a strong bond
bringing in Sammy Lee whose tactical nous and technical qualifications could be summed up in the width of a postage stamp

Reed is a vey real problem for our club - a dangerous idiot.

In this case I'm not so sure CD.Something happened between NC leaving, and MP leaving, otherwise why would the players have stated openly the importance of MoPo staying? That's unheard of,even the Sunderland players never stated openly that they wanted De Canio to leave, even though it was rumoured.

Love this from Mahatma Gandhi "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, THEN YOU WIN! "
