Graziano Pelle backed for more success under Ronald Koeman - so long as his passion to win doesn't boil over

Daily Echo: Graziano Pelle. Picture Southampton FC. Graziano Pelle. Picture Southampton FC.

NEW Saints signing Graziano Pelle is a “perfect fit” for the Premier League.

He is “a delight” to watch, but his passion to win could boil over.

Those are the views of Will Burns, editor of the TotalDutchFootball.com website and someone very familiar with the £8m Italian’s style of play.

Saints completed their second high profile signing in a matter of days over the weekend, bringing in Koeman’s former Feyernoord forward.

Pelle, who celebrates his 29th birthday tomorrow, has been the second highest scorer in the Dutch League for the last two seasons.

He struck 27 goals in only 29 appearances in 2012/13, while he added another 23 goals in 28 outings under Koeman last term.

Burns told the Daily Echo last week that Dusan Tadic was a great first signing by Koeman as he plots his own St Mary’s revolution.

Tadic topped the assists charts in the Dutch Erevidisie last season, and Burns feels he could provide Pelle with many chances in the 2014/15 Premier League season.

Now Burns is confident Koeman has signed an ideal replacement for the talismanic Rickie Lambert.

“Pellè is a player I have admired for the past two seasons, he is a perfect fit for the Premier League,” said Burns.

“At 6ft 4 inches tall, he is physically strong but also a delight to watch on the ball.

“Scoring 50 in 57 games for Feyenoord shows he knows where the target is.

“Playing as a target man, he can overpower any defender to keep the ball at his feet, to then feed into any overlapping player or, better still, create a chance for himself.

“With the great ability of playing two strong feet, Pellè’s movement is also excellent for a big guy, which can provide source of goals when his back is to goal.

“If Southampton can find two great crossers on their wings, then Pelle will deliver goals.

“Inside the box, Pellè is always looking for the ball, losing his marker to usually head home from either near or far post.

“The power in his legs makes him leap well and above the tallest of defenders.

“So from any cross, whether it be in-play, or from a set-piece, Pellè is a real aerial threat.”

That is the plus side to Pelle’s game.

The downside could be his discipline.

Koeman will certainly be keen to ensure his new strike signing does not go the same way as last summer’s record signing Dani Osvaldo.

The Italian international struggled to impress in the Premier League, scoring just three times, and was sent back to Italy in disgrace earlier this year after headbutting Jose Fonte in training.

Burns said of Pelle: “One downfall could be his temperament.

“The Italian is passionate but explosive when things to do not go his way, and has been known to sulk if his side are losing in important games.

“There were some incidents from last season that got Pellè in hot water with the KNVB (Dutch FA).

“The KNVB handed the striker a one-match ban, after he was caught on camera kicking the dugout and smashing TV equipment following his side’s 2-2 draw with FC Twente last March.

“His next appearance in a Feyenoord shirt was in a 2-1 defeat to Ajax.

“Video replays showed during the match, in which Pelle scored his team’s consolation, that the Italian was lucky not to be sent off after he appeared to elbow Ajax defender Joël Veltman.

“Referee Bjorn Kuipers, did not witness the incident, so the KNVB made the decision to suspend Pellè further.

“Afterwards, the Italian was involved in a confrontational interview at pitchside with a Dutch TV interviewer, which helped the KNVB make their decision.

“As a further punishment, Feyenoord added another two games to Pelle’s ban.”

In addition, Koeman stripped Pelle of the captaincy.

“Despite the behavioural issues, the passion Pelle shows displays a great will to win,” Burns continued.

“With great finishing with both feet and his head, I see goals from Pellè and another successful tenure under Koeman.”

Stripped of the captaincy by Koeman, given a 2 game ban extension by the club yet jumped at the chance to work with Koeman again. Im hopeful that speaks volumes about Koemans leadership and ability to demand, and get, the best out of his players.

Don't be too quick to judge, I remember most people slating J Rod when he 1st came as a £7m flop and it took about 9 months before they saw what he was about.
Remember we will be building for the next stage of our development which may not give instant results, but I do hope big Ron can get them up and running ASAP.

He has height, speed and and can use either foot, I think Jay Rod will enjoy playing with this guy when he is fully fit. let's hope he can keep his temper and frustration under control. It seems that we will be playing wider this season, Last season there were times when we played too much through the middle even with over lapping backs. Looks like this season we will spread the ball across the park hopefully at a faster rate so all the opposition do not have time to get back behind the ball as happened too often last season.
Sounds good time will tell.

Moving the subject on to Lovren, what will happen to him on the first game of the season.
His "head is at Liverhampton" and could be lining up against them?
I can't see him playing in this game for us.
I was slightly impressed by his return but I want an apology before he has forgiveness.

Anyway, really looking forward to another great season (also good to see MoPoos old team losing!)

Pelle sounds like a modern day Ron Davies ! So to get the best from him we must buy the best winger possible who can cross the ball onto Pelle's head, just as Terry Paine used to do.

Alternatively we need a system than the overlapping full backs get down to the line and cross it in for him. Cline & chambers can do this so need to buy a Left back who can. The next replacement to get us back to last seasons level.

Then we need the four quality players to take us up a level that we all realized we needed to add to last seasons squad before the departures.

A top quality GK, CB, M and a pacy Striker (as J-Rod not back til Jan at best) to bring in asap.

We CAN afford these five players & RonKo can attract them, so up to you LES REED, two this week & two next week plus one before the window closes. A season long loan deal would also be good, eg Lukaku ?!

Sign these and make a statement to the football world who have written us off and to make up for selling Adam & Luke too early. Season tickets will sell quickly when these top quality players arrive.

I think that there is a great chance that RonKo cannot only persuade Lovren to stay but also get the very best out of him. After a full apology from him, we all need to forgive and forget. Give him a chance to regain his confidence by giving our full support. If RonKo cannot do this, then we sell Lovren for top dollar (or more). The selling is over and only Osvaldo will go now . I'm really excited about the new season.

You're absolutely right, it's a phenomenal rate!

Interestingly, it's a better scoring rate than Luis Suarez had in the same league!(91 in 139).

If you compare Suarez stats from Ajax with his Liverpool stats, he played 110 games for both teams, scoring 81 for Ajax and "just" 69 for Liverpool.

Clearly some players are able to make the transition to the Prem from the Eredivisie and still maintain a reasonable scoring rate, let's hope he's one of them! :)

RonKO knows he needs and has cash to improve the defense so a new LB GK & CB are definitely required.

We must score a lot more goals next season so another midfielder and another Striker are also definitely required.

But then we all knew this last season, so RonKo's dilemma's before he goes in to buy the next players are :-

1. Are any of the young players ready to step up next season as Luke did last year. eg Matt Targett; McQueen or Isgrove may save us buying a Winger; Reed, Gallagher etc
Possibly not yet, so they could be cover and give competition for places.

2. With J-Rod out until Jan & Guly gone, who will be our Strike options ?
-Can Osvaldo be brought back into the fold and form a deadly Italian partnership with Pelle ?;
-Has Emanuel Mayuka improved during his loan last season ?
-Is Billy Sharp or Blunt when feeding off Pelle's knock downs ?
-Does he buy OR get a season long loan eg Lukaku ?
I think it will one of these last two options and get another top striker in.

Therefore we still have FIVE top quality players to sign before next season starts. We CAN afford them & RonKo CAN attract them.

So up to Les & the board to get this done asap, TWO this week, TWO next week & TWO before the window closes.

Then RonKo has options and cover everywhere and we will be a lot better than last season.

As I understand it J Rod is out until late October. Which means any Summer move for Rod is most unlikely.
If we keep the midfield players we already have I don't really think midfield needs attention other than a wide player maybe. In fact at the moment its very strong and Tadic can play wide left of behind the front striker.
At the moment the real problem is LB we do not even have one as cover other than young Tag who needs more time.
A striker to compliment Pelle. Gallagher still has lots to learn as i am sure he will admit.
Then a centre back because in my opinion Hoov doesn't cut it and if Lovren goes that leaves Yosh and Fonte with no back up.
Goalkeeper because Kelv has done his bit, I don't think Gazz will ever do his which leaves us woefully short of quality if Boruc is injured,
Midfield we have Morgan and the reason he is not on the list for the tour is he is still on his official world cup break. Ramirez, Tadic, Davis, Vic, Prowse, Cork, Reed.
I actually think with a bit of coaching Ramirez could infill as a striker he has the touches and the pace.
If Lovren really wants to go then his best way out is to play his heart out until someone matches the price we feel is right.

Osvaldo though needs to grow a pair and come back to training even if it is on his own now until after the tour. Sadly I think he lacks the courage to return and try and put things right. I think even Fonte would respect that.

I am hoping that Dejan gives a performance that says "Let's see what you could have won". He doesn't have to apologise to me, as long as he sorts things out with the Club that's fine by me. If he cannot, as I said before, we need to get top dollar and preferably not sold to another Premier team.

Your wummery would have so much more value if you ever posted something that made sense. Re-login as gormz and tell yourself how clever you are and have a conversation with yourself ala Gollem again.
"He watches Dutch football" some expert.did you ever use the term "wum" before you started commenting on here? No you didn't,you do now because you want to fit in.you want to belong.you desperately want to belong.
to be honest all so called EXPERTS dont really know any thing, every single expert expected Brazil to win the world cup, When Germany whooped them Argentina became favs and was going to beat Germany 3 - 1 and also said Brazil was going to beat Holland 3 - 0. but please enlighten me as to how many results any so called EXPERT got right during this world cup? i read every prediction and every pre match report and every single so called EXPERT got it 100 % wrong on nearlly every result during the world cup ( unless the result was obvious ) eg England getting kicked out in group stages ohh wait they said we would make semis hahahahahah.

and before you say dont read them........ you have to read all the comments to get to the decent ones / Find out if they are decent.

Swap details and argue out of sight of every one else or just dont comment at all. Really wish DE would moderate the forum and ban persistant argumentive people who just cause unrest.

half my post went missing some how?

before this " you have to read all the comments to get to the decent ones / Find out if they are decent " i said, if your going to argue at least do it with out insulting and downgrading other users, if you cant " discuss " with out insulting other users then dont post. and before you say dont read it you have to read all the comments to get to the decent ones / Find out if they are decent.

all i am saying is, discuss it as Adults not a bunch of 12 year old kids who parents didnt teach them to be respectfull, as i for one do NOT want my 11 year old reading this website and he does so please keep your aweful spitfull swearing insulting behavior to your selfs so that the forum can be read by people of all ages

Last thing i want to do is to stop my son reading about the club he loves because of a hand full of people who cant discuss things with out being rude and swearing at each other.

Rant over, dont care about the thumbs down just shows your maturity level....

Don't mention that name on here, you will upset the natives, are there any other Saints fans in your area? I don't know much about Australian football (soccer that is) are there any decent teams to watch? We have seen some good Oz players in the UK, anybody that you can recommend at the moment, they had a pretty rough time in the WC against 3 really good teams.

In the children's version the entry will read,

WUM. Sad lonely person who spends his time trying to wind up and annoy good decent people. Can be found in public but mostly they live in their parents house whilst pretending to live thousands of miles away.

Hi mr Lowe.why are you such a fan of a man that ruined saints?
Don't mention that name on here, you will upset the natives, are there any other Saints fans in your area? I don't know much about Australian football (soccer that is) are there any decent teams to watch? We have seen some good Oz players in the UK, anybody that you can recommend at the moment, they had a pretty rough time in the WC against 3 really good teams.
Yeah there is an australian supporters association an they meet once a month.we have the A league over here.its the same as the spl, each major city has a team.sydney and melbourne have two teams.man city have just bought melbourne heart and they will take most of the decent young players.there is a player called tommy oar who played at the World Cup and he would be great for saints

Getting excited - COYS
We need a quality No 2 keeper as cover Boruc is as good as any in the top 6 apart from the odd gaff, make no mistake our top 4 position at the start of last season was in no small part due to him..

One or two quality CB's yep…Left back..hmmm yes but I think we have good cover there already.

Not comlaining but I wonder if Saints are going to sign any players that I have heard of before?
BR is buying our players and he knows they can do a job in the BPL while we are taking chances that we hope will pay off for us. If have to bring in around seven new players than I hope at least a few of them are not new to this league and can help the others get a good start.

When I read the description in the above article,it straightaway had me thinking Peter Crouch Mk 2.That wouldn't be a disaster.

I don't mind as long as the signings aren't called John. Boring - it seems to me that every Tom, Dick and Harry round these parts is called John.

But we do need a striker whose height is somewhere between Pelle's and Billy Sharp's. Pelle will have snow on his head come January - and when Billy pulls his winter socks up he can't see properly.

The best move the board made was to hire Koeman. The best thing about last season is we are getting bucket loads of money for our players. If we lose Lovren and Schneiderlin we have another £50M. The two Koeman has brought in look like good replacements for Lambo and Lallana. Matt Targett will soon be ready to step into Luke Shaw's shoes. The guy Virgil Van Dijk at Celtic was on the cards as a possible Lovren cover. We were linked with Marshall and Fraser Foster as goalkeeping cover. Koeman needs a bit of space to do the deals. Each new player has to be convinced Southampton is te right place for him.
Koeman took over Feyenoord when they were 10th and selling players yet he got a 2nd, 3rd and 2nd (the 3rd was only on goal difference) in the Dutch league. I am very confident we will be top 10 this year and top 6 the year after. When you look at what this guy has achieved he is a god - he even played under Johann Cruyff. Just can't wait for the season to start - Mopo thank you for leaving and giving us this opportunity!

You could be wrong Louis Suarez came from the Dutch league and he was quite good, no football club is rich, the owners of the clubs are the ones who are rich.

Hope im wrong , but i doubt it . Suarez and many other great players have played in the eredivisie ...but they leave when they are young to make a career elsewhere . Pelle is 29 and has failed to achieve any success in Italian football .

Van wolfswinkel, vennegoor ,tomasson , luuk de jong are just a few who has had no problem banging in loads in Holland , but couldn't hit a barn door in England .Its just like Scotland .

...But we will see . Our manager has not got premier league experience either. Lets hope they adapt very quickly

Struggled to find it :

Ronald Koeman, the new manager of Southampton, has told his central defender Dejan Lovren that he is not for sale and he wants him back for training. Lovren is trying to force through a move to Liverpool, or even Manchester United.
This was always going to happen, once Southampton cashed in on Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, and allowed manager Mauricio Pochettino to leave for Tottenham Hotspur. Lovren knows Southampton’s moment has passed.
The best the club can hope for next season is stagnation — it will be an outstanding achievement if Koeman can take them forward having lost key elements of the team. Why, then, would Lovren hang around for what is more likely to be managed decline?
Koeman’s message is that Southampton are no longer a selling club, but we know this is not true. More importantly, so does Lovren and every other good player on the books.

More importantly, so does Lovren and every other good player on the books.[/p][/quote]Thanks. I hope he's wrong. Seedhouse the Unrepentant

-Can Osvaldo be brought back into the fold and form a deadly Italian partnership with Pelle ?;

Not sure how Guly going has anything to do with striking options ! . He only scored one Premiership goal and that was for Arsenal and was able to finish on minus 1 in the top flight.

For Pelle, Koeman
Read Osvaldo, Potchetino.
Almost exactly the same relationship,
Hopefully not the same result.

Another top Striker is as much a priority as a Left Back.
Matty Targett is untried & may need easying in, so a top quality LB is still a priority, then we will have competition for that position.
We must score more goals next season and Pelle may be useful but may not be the sensation we need.
Therefore a 20 plus premiership goals per season Striker is what we also urgently need.

Then a top quality Gk, CB & midfield/winger are the other positions to improve us from last season and prove all the doubters wrong.

So that is 5 players needed, come on Les get on with it. RonKo needs them to settle them as a team.

The last time anyone left Southamptonand for Spurs and had any real success, was Martin Chivers,in 1968!
Even in those days we got mugged over one of our best players. The Spuds gave us Frank Saul as a make weight in the Chivers deal. A man who couldn,t get into their first team on a regular basis, yet we had him.
Yes echo1948 we did get Frank Saul in return for Martin Chivers but with the money we also bought Jimmy Gabriel from Everton & John McGrath from Newcastle. Plus what we didn't realize was that we had a replacement for Chivers in Mick Channon coming through.
These signings kept Saints in the top flight so Ted Bates considerably improved the team with these deals.

Dream on mate, Gnabry would be on loan at best, Michu I think is already spoken for, Ings is staying put I reckon, I think we have to look elsewhere for now, no idea about the others you mentioned. Just my thoughts mind, no sources available.

So Pelle stands at almost 6'4" and he's taking us to the Champions League but the rest of the song depends on his shirt number and currently JRod has Ron Davies' #9. I wonder when he and Tadic will get their numbers.
Shirt 11 is free - but Uwe Rosler and Michael Svensson don't easily lend themselves ... 'he gets the ball he beats the tosser he wears the shirt of Uwe Rosler' ?
